While zombie games might be a common sight these days a new game from the master of horror may be about to give us a new twist – with John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando announced at the Summer Game Fest.
The game comes from Saber Interactive and will see up to four players teaming up to face a supernatural outbreak. Coming from the mind of 80s horror legend John Carpenter, it promises plenty of action and humour with its horror, and it’s leaning into those 80s vibes of the era where he made his name. The trailer showed off plenty of those undead – and a whole bunch of bombastic weapons and action to boot.
As for the plot – the game takes place in the near future, with the undead rising due to “an experimental attempt to harness the power of the Earth’s core” gone wrong, as you do. It ended up releasing the Sludge God, who’s been transforming the area and turning the living to the undead. It’s down to you and your friends as a bunch of hired mercenaries, to set things right.
There’s even a quote from Carpenter himself, who says “Look, I really like shooting zombies. They keep telling me that they’re called ’the infected.’ Please. They’re ghouls, dude. They blow up real good and there are a ton of them. People are going to love this game.” Let’s hope so. John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is set to arrive on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC in 2024.
