At the time of writing – people are claiming that ChatGPT is down. Users around the world have experienced issues with the OpenAI service.

Starting at around 2:51pm BST on July 13th, users seem to be experiencing the ChatGPT failed to get service status error. Popular website status detector – Down Detector – corroborates these reports, with a significant spike in users having issues. According to status.openai.com, the service is reporting a ‘degraded performance for ChatGPT’ with a message that OpenAI is “currently investigating this issue.”

By 17:03pm BST, OpenAI issued an update, saying “A fix has been implemented and we are monitoring the results.”

At the time of writing it was impossible for us to get onto the service. We encountered the error message ‘Sorry, you have been blocked’. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this error message, and there are some potential fixes for the ChatGPT sorry you have been blocked that are worth trying.

In the meantime, there are plenty of ChatGPT alternatives that will work while we wait for the ChatGPT servers to return.

Why is ChatGPT down?

ChatGPT, which runs using a multimodal language model, depends on huge servers which is effectively the ‘brain’ that GPT is maintained in. When these servers are at capacity, or worse, when they’re no longer able to sustain their load, it’s possible that they go down.

When they do go down, it’s not the end of the world, as they’re likely to be ‘powered on’ fairly shortly. After all, there are now thousands of people around the world depending on ChatGPT for their services.

We’re going to be keeping an eye out for the latest updates on ChatGPT, especially if it’s down, so make sure to check back in with us periodically for the latest updates.
