According to a senior executive at Swiss carrier Swisscom, Apple has set a US launch date of September 5 for the iPhone 5, with the device launching globally the following month.

Swisscom is Apple’s partner in Switzerland. The executive – who asked to remain anonymous – leaked the information to iPhone Italia.

The date contradicts previous rumours that production on the new phone won’t begin until September, pointing to a late 2011 / early 2012 release date.

That said, the CEO of US telecoms firm Verizon, speaking in a conference call with analysts over the weekend, revealed that the iPhone 5 will be released sometime “in the fall”.

The new iPhone is reported to be thinner, lighter, and boast an 8MP camera, although it’s been reported elsewhere that the device is not a huge update over the iPhone 4.

Another day, another iPhone 5 rumour. Most rumours seem to be pointing to an autumn release now, which would mean that a formal announcement from Apple shouldn’t be too far off.
