The iPhone 5 is official, with Apple announcing the new device at an event this evening. The tech firm also revealed a new iPod Touch.
Announced at an event in San Francisco, the iPhone 5 sports a 4-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1136×640. As well as the larger screen compared to the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5 includes a new A6 processor which is said to offer 2x the processing and graphical performance of the dual-core A5 in the 4S. The new phone is also thinner and lighter than the 4S, although it is taller due to the larger screen.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 begin on September 14, with the device released on September 21. A UK price is still to be confirmed, but Apple announced it would be the same as when the iPhone 4S launched.
If you’re not bothered about phone capabilities, the new iPod Touch looks like a formidable gaming device, too, with the same screen as the iPhone 5 and internals similar to those in the iPhone 4S – the included A5 chip is said to offer 7x the performance of the current Touch. No UK pricing was announced, but the 32GB is $299 and the 64GB is $399.
Clumsy Ninja (a kind of Nintendogs for ninjas) was demoed on the new iPod Touch, but the star demo was EA’s Real Racing 3 running on the new iPhone 5.
Less exciting, but perhaps something long overdue, is a new set of earbuds. These ‘EarPods’ as Apple calls them are available today to buy standalone or bundled with the new iPod touch, the new iPod nano and the iPhone 5.
