Infinity Ward, the original poster boy of the Call of Duty franchise, is creating a new Call of Duty title for release this holiday season, Activision has announced.

Infinity Ward helped raise the profile of Call of Duty with the Modern Warfare series, but after a high profile studio disbandment its first next generation effort, Call of Duty Ghosts, proved to be a disappointment.

It’s not clear if the studio will return to Ghosts, Modern Warfare or perhaps focus on new Call of Duty entry – maybe something with aliens as in Ghosts’ co-op mode.

It was perhaps telling that Activision president and CFO Eric Hirshberg completely ignored Ghosts when announcing the new game in last night’s earnings call.

“This Q4 we will have a new innovative Call of Duty game from our award-winning studio, Infinity Ward, the makers of the Modern Warfare series,” he told investors.
