If The Sims 4 isn’t successful it could spell the end for the franchise, Maxis has warned.
The latest entry in the long-running people simulator launched across the globe last week to a mixed reaction from fans, prompting some to ask about the future of the series – in particular, Maxis’ plans for The Sims 5.
But on the official Sims forums, producer Grant Rodiek explained: “We’re not working on Sims 5. We’re not thinking about Sims 5. If Sims 4 isn’t successful, there won’t be a Sims 5.”
Some of the criticism directed at The Sims 4 appears to stem from fan-favourite features missing from the base game, including toddlers and pool creation.
Maxis has previously put the missing features down to focusing “on revolutionising the Sims themselves” and going “deeper on the features that make Sims come alive”.
The studio has previously suggested that the title could come to console at a later date, too.
Regardless, The Sims 4 seems to be off to a good start. The game debuted in the top spot of this week’s UK charts, pushing last week’s No.1 Metro Redux down to number three.
