Developer Heart Machine has announced a follow-up to beloved 2016 action RPG Hyper Light Drifter, called Hyper Light Breaker.

As revealed via a Tumblr blog post by the developer, the new game won’t be a direct sequel. However, Hyper Light Breaker will be set in the same universe as a new, standalone story. The team say it’ll “share aesthetics, threads, lore and other recognizable elements” but will be a “new game driven by new designs.”

One of those major changes includes the rogue-lite eschewing the 2D style of the original for a fully 3D world. You’ll enter a new land called the Overgrowth and explore massive biomes with brutal monsters. Your mission is to overthrow the Abyss King either solo or with friends via online co-op.

The game promises a wide arsenal of weapons and items to customise your build. Between excursions, you’ll also be helping establish a settlement. This will act as a hub between runs, where your accomplishments will see new characters and more arrive to unlock permanent upgrades to help you out in future runs.

While there’s still plenty of development time to go, the team has revealed the first trailer for the game which you can see below. Hyper Light Breaker is intending to launch into early access on PC in Early Spring 2023.
