Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima has actively changed parts of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach to make it more “polarising”, claims the game’s composer Yoann ‘Woodkit’ Lemoine.

Death Stranding 2 needs to be polarising

Kojima, known for his extremely bizarre games, has often taken his games to the extreme, creating some fantastic-but-controversial titles. For example, Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots had some great core gameplay, but many didn’t like its story choices, and the first Death Stranding game is as polarising as they come.

Speaking in an interview with Rolling Stone, thanks VGC, Woodkit revealed that Kojima has been actively changing aspects of the game after playtests to make the game less enjoyable for every player. According to the composer, the creator aimed to make the game less “mainstream” for players.

“There’s a key moment where we had a discussion, probably halfway [through] when we were doing the game, where he came to me and he said, ‘We have a problem.’” the composer explained.

“Then he said, ‘I’m going to be very honest, we have been testing the game with players and the results are too good. They like it too much. That means something is wrong; we have to change something.’ And he changed stuff in the script and the way some crucial stuff [happens] in the game because he thought his work was not polarizing and not triggering enough emotions.”

According to the composer, Kojima explained that “if everyone likes it, it means it’s mainstream. It means it’s conventional. It means it’s already pre-digested for people to like it. And I don’t want that.”

Kojima reportedly explained the goal of his work is to make people “end ip liking things they didn’t like when they first encountered it, because that’s where you really end up loving something”. Time will tell just how divisive Death Stranding 2 ends up being.

After the release of On the Beach, Kojima is set to continue development of OD, his upcoming horror game with Jordan Peele. Additionally, the iconic game developer is also working on his Metal Gear Solid spiritual successor Physint, which only exists because of the fanbase’s fervour for the creator to return.
