There’s the common statement that “the customer is always right”. However, many often forget the second half of that statement “in matters of taste”. However, as Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead Game Studios found out, live-service games end up living or dying based on this sentiment.

Earlier this year, Helldivers 2 suffered from mass review bombs and even lower player counts due to patches that massively increased the game’s difficulty. Now, after bringing a swathe of buffs to the game and continuing to add new weapons, stratagems and more, player counts are up and the game is in a much better place.

Helldivers 2 reviews are “overwhelmingly positive”

As pointed out by fans online, the Helldivers 2 Steam page has now been graced with the “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating. While the game’s overall reviews are still at “Mostly Positive”, recent reviews are almost entirely great.

While gamers aren’t always right—for example, gamers have called for no skill-based matchmaking, and the one new game without it is already dead—but sometimes they are. For example, as a live-service title, Arrowhead’s multiplayer game does need to accommodate to players.

Of course, some hardcore players have since wished the harder difficulty stayed in Helldivers 2, something Arrowhead is looking to add back in additional difficulty options. However, with the game’s increased player count, it’s obvious that the majority of the player base did not gel with the harder game.

A big future

Arrowhead is far from done with its awesome multiplayer co-op game. While still not officially announced, the game’s third enemy faction—The Illuminate—is set to arrive in the game in a future update with their own mission objectives for players to complete. Recent leaks have even shown terrifying new Automaton enemies as well as Super Earth regions to fight through.

While it’s unknown exactly what the studio is planning for its next year of content, Helldivers 2’s core is in an extremely strong place. Whatever happens next—as long as it doesn’t completely destroy the main gameplay loop—fans are looking forward to it.
