Arrowhead Game Studios is constantly working on fantastic additions to Helldivers 2. After the arrival of the Illuminate, leaks have revealed that the studio is working on terrifying new enemies, weapon customisation and a terrifying invasion of Super Earth.
In an interview with Polygon, game director Mikael Eriksson explained that Arrowhead is always looking towards the future. While there are plans to turn the game into an eventual “Helldivers 3”, the studio is planning for an eventual “5.0” release.
Helldivers 2 5.0 will be massive
Speaking to the outlet, Eriksson explained that Arrowhead treats the game as a tabletop experience where they’re the Game Masters.
“We build the game in general with a systemic approach — we wanted to emulate a tabletop role-playing kind of experience,” the game director said. “There’s a bunch of ways the story that you’re playing can turn out, and there’s randomness factored in alongside the choices of the people you’re playing with. That sort of emergent storytelling is something we think is super fun, and it’s what we want to do with the war and the game master.”
On launch, Arrowhead’s 1.0 version of the game was great, with the arrival of the Illuminate being the first huge step towards the future of the game. However, the studio is continually looking forward, cooking ideas to release amazing updates further down the line.
“When we first launched the game, I thought, ‘OK, we have a version 1.0 here, but we’re imagining a 3.0 or 5.0 that’ll be super epic,’” he said. “I didn’t anticipate how powerful it already was. When we had Malevelon Creek moments, or Meridia, or whatever — people were role-playing and we had players super invested in the story. It was such a beautiful thing to see, and it blew us away.”
With this in mind, Arrowhead is also working internally to improve the feeling of true tabletop campaigns. After the DSS storyline, the studio is aiming to create better, more reactive stories that players have a real impact on.
“[DSS] was a shaky launch, but it’s at least one of the steps, and we’re planning to improve on the DSS and keep building on the functionality,” they explained. “It’s one of the ways we want to give a chess piece to the community, and we have several more planned as well. We want to give the community ways to have a real impact on the outcomes of the Galactic War and leave permanent marks. They’d be able to change the game meta in considerable, noticeable ways, just like people in a tabletop role-playing game.”
Helldivers 2 is already a fantastic game with tonnes of gameplay. However, judging from how the original game was handled after launch, we’re far from done.
