A dream come true for many fans of Xbox’s debut hit, a new Halo Combat Evolved VR mod brings the iconic first-person shooter into virtual reality for the first time.
Created by modder LivingFray, the Halo VR mod is not compatible with the popular Master Chief Collection. Instead, it’s a “full VR conversion mod for the original 2003 PC edition of Halo: Combat Evolved.”

Available to download here, the new virtual reality conversion is exactly what players want from a VR mod. Alongside playing the game inside a VR headset, the conversion also boasts full six-degrees of freedom aiming for weapons.

To make the game as immersive as possible, the new modification also benefits from immersive crouching, actual melee combat and the ability to turn on your flashlight by tapping your head. (Just like turning on Detective Vision in Arkham Shadow.)
There are a few issues with the initial release of Combat Evolved in VR. For example, entering and exiting vehicles can result in some uncomfortable jitters. Furthermore, vehicles in general aren’t for players who are easily motion sick.
Nevertheless, this is a dream come true for many players. While a VR mod for the Master Chief Collection was in development years ago, that project has since been depreciated. This new conversion of Combat Evolved does require an installation of the original PC version from 2003, but it’s still a fantastic way to play.
“This mod is my first time attempting to reverse engineer and mod a close sourced game engine requiring learning how to decompile, analyse and patch x86 assembly,” the modder said. “As you may guess, this is hard. By focusing on an older title I have a simpler project to work with as I do not have an additional 2 decades worth of updates and advances in technology to worry about.”
