Grand Theft Auto 6 is primed to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time with rival game companies unable to sleep as its release nears. However, GTA 6 isn’t releasing day and date on PC alongside the PS5 and Xbox Series launch and no one really knows why.
In an interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that GTA 6 isn’t releasing on PC alongside console simply due to Rockstar’s historic track record of not doing so. With GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 forcing PC gamers to wait years to play the game, Rockstar is fine with repeating the process with Grand Theft Auto 6.
GTA 6 isn’t launching on PC because GTA V didn’t
In the IGN interview, Zelnick explained that PC versions of games “can generate 40% of overall sales, or even more”. This means that GTA 6 will undoubtedly sell gangbusters on PC when that version eventually releases, but the prospect of additional millions isn’t changing anything.
“We don’t always go across all platforms simultaneously,” Zelnick told the outlet. “Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms.”
Additionally, the game publisher CEO explained that the falling sales of console hardware means that PC releases are becoming “much more” important than before. Nevertheless, Rockstar’s guaranteed success across all platforms means that the PC launch can wait.
“We have seen PC become a much more and more important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see that trend continue,” Zelnick explained. “Of course, there will be a new console generation.”
The CEO explained that people will buy console hardware for GTA 6 while also explaining that there is an “increasing share of the market that is reflected in PC”. For PC gamers, this either means double-dipping on the console launch and then the PC release later or just waiting and avoiding spoilers for a year.
