GTA 6 map mod for GTA 5 killed by Take-Two as creator admits it was “probably a little too accurate”

A huge GTA 5 mod that recreated the entirety of GTA 6’s map in the now decade-plus-old open-world game has been legally razed by Take-Two. Despite the new Grand Theft Auto game’s unreleased nature, the mod was able to create an “accurate” version of the title’s world in the old title.

In an update to fans, modder Dark Space explained that Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two served a takedown notice on a video made by the modder. As a result, the mod has been removed and all work has ceased on the project.

Revealed in a response video to fans, via IGN, Dark Space confirmed that an earlier video they created on the map project for Grand Theft Auto V had been served a DMCA takedown notice by Take-Two.

“I’ve also removed the download links for my mod, even though they didn’t ask me to,” the modder told fans. “I think it’s smarter to get out in front of them rather than waiting for their email that will never come”

Dark Space’s mod was based on information found on the GTA 6 Mapping Project, a community-led initiayive to map out the upcoming game in its entirety. The project, heavily based on leaks, trailers and real-world parallels to the game’s Vice City world, is as accurate as possible. With this in mind, it’s not surprising to see Take-Two’s actions towards the GTA 6 mod.

They must feel some sort of threat from it existing because they feel that having a playable version of the map to drive around in could ruin the surprise and newness when it releases.”

The modder said that they find the way Take-Two goes about taking down content “disrespectful” to the “creativity and passion of the community”. With amazing mods like GTA Vice City Next-Gen Edition fully recreating entire games in newer engines,

With GTA 5, the game’s dead anyways,” they said. “I only did this project for the community and to make a fun video on it for my viewers. The project was completely free to download. While I did spend tons of time making it, my plan was to earn the money from my video itself.”

With GTA 6 still scheduled to come out on Xbox and PlayStation at the tail end of 2025, sometime after Borderlands 4, it won’t be too long until players can get their hands on the new open-world game. Of course, Rockstar’s PC port of the game won’t release day-and-date with the other versions in typical GTA fashion.
