Sony Pictures Entertainment has dropped the first full trailer for the upcoming Gran Turismo movie, directed by District 9 helmer Neill Blomkamp.

The movie will star Midsommar actor Archie Madekwe as Jann Mardenborough, a real-life British professional racing driver whose career started after he beat 90,000 other entrants of the GT Academy, a programme that saw the racing simulator game team up with Nissan to offer one skilled driver the chance to drive for them in the Dubai 24 Hour race. Also appearing in the flick are Stranger Things actor David Harbour as trainer Jack Salter and Orlando Bloom in the role of Danny Moore, with Guardians of the Galaxy’s Djimon Hounsou and former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell Horner rounding out the cast.

The trailer gives us a decent idea of what to expect from the dramatization, including a bunch of nods to the racing series – check out the stack of older Gran Turismo cases on Jann’s shelves – although if we’re picky, the timeline is a little off given Gran Turismo 7 features in the trailer quite prominently, despite that game releasing in 2022 (and the real life Mardenborough’s story happened in 2011).

We previously got our first glimpse of the Gran Turismo movie back in January, when a first peek at an early scene was shown off as part of the Sony Showcase during CES 2023. However, this is the first proper trailer we’ve had since the movie was first rumoured around this time last year. Today’s trailer also came with the reveal of the first official poster for the movie, which you can see below.

Speaking on directing the movie, Blomkamp sat down for a Q&A with the PlayStation Blog to talk about translating the game to the screen visually. “Well, it really came down to creating something that would just be cool to watch on a large cinema screen, and for that we doubled down on FPV drones to carry IMAX sensor-approved cameras. There’s a ton of airborne, high-speed drone work in the film, and we utilized a pursuit-arm mounted to a high-speed vehicle. In this case, we actually mounted it to an R35 GTR, which could actually keep pace (pretty much) with a lot of the GT3 cars in the film.”

The Gran Turismo movie is currently set to arrive in theatres and in IMAX cinemas on August 11, 2023 in the UK. Meanwhile, the latest game in the series – Gran Turismo 7 – recently got itself PS VR2 support in a patch earlier this year.
