Bethesda and Tango Gameworks have shown off extended gameplay from upcoming supernatural action adventure, Ghostwire: Tokyo as previously promised.

A twenty minute presentation last night included a substantial gameplay demo. You’re playing Akito, a young man who wakes up in the streets of Tokyo as one of the few survivors of a mysterious event. Said event has left the entire city devoid of people, and in their place are spirits, ghostly apparitions and demons.

You’ve not woken up alone, however. It appears Akito has somehow bonded with the spirit of a deceased detective known only as KK. He’s chasing after the man who seems to have caused this, known only as Hannya. You’re after him too, which is understandable, so you’re teaming up to explore the city, and find out what’s going on. We’re teased, however, that KK may have motivations of his own.

Luckily, bonding with KK means you have access to an ability called Ethereal Bonding. This lets you wield energy charged with elemental powers to combat the more hostile spirits. You’ll have to do enough damage, expose their Visitor’s Core and finish them off. You can also use this energy to grapple over rooftops and take down enemies. There’ll also be parts where you’ll be separated from KK and lose your powers, but you’ll also have supernatural weapons at your disposal too.

The second half of the presentation features members of the Tango Gameworks team talking about their inspirations for the game. Talking to studio founder and Resident Evil legend Shinji Mikami, the team speak on influences from both classic and modern Japanese folklore. You can check out all that in the second video under the Ghostwire: Tokyo gameplay video down below.

Ghostwire: Tokyo arrives on PlayStation 5 and PC on March 25, 2022.
