Speaking at the Tokyo International Digital Conference, Ken Kutaragi, president of Sony Computer Entertainment, has said how the Cell processor will be reduced in size to reduce its power consumption and enable multiple core architectures. The reduced size will enable the ‘Micro Cell’ to be used in mobile devices. Kutaragi also spoke about the PlayStation 3’s ability to run games at 120 frames per second, stating that this rate will become the “the benchmark for the coming generation of digital life.“

All this talk about 120 frames per second is all very nice, but why is it so special. I’m sure the PlayStation could run games at 120 frames per second should the game be simple enough for the hardware to render it at that speed. This just sounds like another round of the ‘mine’s better than yours’ arguments that have been kicking off in the build up to the next generation.
