Larian’s time with Baldur’s Gate 3 is nearing its end. With the studio officially “closing the book” on the RPG as it works on a new game, Hasbro isn’t willing to let the game’s massive popularity go unexploited.
Hasbro has already revealed that it is planning a future for Baldur’s Gate as a whole. With Larian’s departure, the IP holder wants to continue the series and “raise the bar” with future devs, but we’ll be hearing more about the company’s plans “very soon”.
Hasbro has big plans for Baldur’s Gate 3
Speaking to journalist Steven Totilo at Game File (paywalled), Wizards of the Coast’s Senior SVP for Gaming Dan Ayoub explained that fans will hear more about the company’s plans for BG3 in the very near future.
For now, the company is still planning the future of Baldur’s Gate, but announcements are coming soon.
“We’re still determining the next steps for Baldur’s Gate as a franchise,” the Wizards of the Coast executive said. “I will certainly tease you that… we’ll be talking a little more about our thinking around Baldur’s Gate in the very near future. Like very near future.”
With the record-breaking success of Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s no chance in Hell that Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro will not be looking to try and capitalise on the game’s massive popularity. Whether that’s an expansion made by a different studio, a completely new game by new developers or spin-off materials like an official cartoon, something is definitely in the works.
While there is always the worry that no game could live up to the brilliance of BG3, it’s worth noting that Larian Studios was not the first developer to play within the sub-series’ sandbox. Yes, BG3 is by far the best of the trilogy, but even if the follow-up is half as good, it should still be one hell of an RPG.
As for the future of Larian, the studio is already hard at work on its next title. Major technical advancements have already been implemented for the studio’s in-house game engine and, judging by recent comments, the developer’s penchant for pristine single-player stories will continue.
