SOE president John Smedley has stated that free-to-play MMOs are “here to stay”, in an interview with GameTrailers.

“In fact, you’re beginning to see variations on free-to-play which I find very interesting,” he said.

“I think it’s a great trend and people used to associate free-to-play with low quality and they don’t any more. They’re starting to see “hey! This really is a good business model”.

Speaking on the topic of the future of MMOs for the company, Smedley said:

“One of the key areas that we intend to stake a lot of our territory out is in sandboxes, we believe very strongly in emergent gameplay where players can…giving them the tools and abilities in the game to interact in ways that we don’t necessarily expect and plan for in day one.

“A good example of this is Minecraft. I think this is one of the most brilliant things to come alone in maybe the last 20 years of game.”

SOE is currently working on the MMO sequel to PlanetSide.

The company recently hinted the game will come to PS3 and could include a free-to-play component, which has yet to be detailed.
