Austin-based independent developer Steel Penny Games has today announced its acceptance into the Nintendo WiiWare developer stable, with its first title for the service set for release in mid-2008.

The title is an original IP which blends a challenging puzzle game with fantasy environments and appealing characters. The new IP is hoped to span a series of game releases. The team has spent the past year building a proprietary engine geared towards the Wii platform, pointing towards a title which will make full use of the console’s unique attributes.

Steep Penny Games was formed early in 2007 by former Naughty Dog veterans Jason Hughes and Andrew Gilmour. Hughes has praised the WiiWare service, calling it the “modern equivalent of the garage method for an independent to gain a foothold in the industry”.
