Baldur’s Gate 3 mods on console are awesome, but their implementation is extremely limited compared to the unlimited experience on PC. While PC players can play massive custom campaigns and play as races such as the Baldurian Warforged living machines, console players aren’t allowed to do any of that.
However, one modder has found an ingenious workaround to bring race mods to console, although technically they piggyback off another form of mods to actually work. While not perfect, console players should be able to technically play as new races just like PC players can.
Custom Baldur’s Gate 3 races on console
Baldur’s Gate 3 modder Ase243’s new ASE Goblins mod is the first test for bringing race mods to console. As explained by the modder, this “race mode” is “technically a disguise mod” created specifically for console that allows players to play as a new race within the limits of console modding.
Technically, the new ASE Goblins mod is a disguise mod that turns both Origin and Custom characters into a goblin, complete with 5 unique sub-races, 20 unique looks, new sub-race skills and passives and even tags for dialogue options.
To play as the goblin race with the mod, players need to pick up or buy the “Goblin Belongings” item in the following areas:
- Nautiloid – In a Goblin Chest in the first room
- Act 1 – Get from Grat in the Goblin Camp or Blurg in the Myconid Colony
- Act 2 – From Lann Tarv at Moonrise Towers
- Act 3 – Popper at the Circus
After grabbing the goblin belongings and using them, players will become a Goblin race character. Equipping the “Goblin Underwear” of a particular sub-race will also allow you to choose which type of Goblin you are. Additionally, you can give your companions a pair of Goblin Underwear to turn them into Goblins as well with their own looks.
With the ASE Goblins mod, Baldur’s Gate 3 players get access to the following skills:
- +6 Stealth
- Darkvision
- Attack of Opportunity
- Throw Rock
- Nimble Escape
- Goblin Warcry
- Goblin Weapon & Armour Proficiency (Scimitars, Short Swords, Warpicks, Spears, Morningstars, Maces, Shortbows, Shields and Medium Armor)
- Dialogue Tags for All Goblins – Barbarian and Evil-Cleric
“I created this mod specifically for console, read every guide and community post I could find, and gave my best to find a solution that stays within the console release limits.” the modder explained in a blog post. “I would gladly invest more time to change things up, so that console players can enjoy this mod down the line.”
At the time of writing, the mod is going through the console approval process, but the mod is also available for PC players. Over the past month, PC players have been trialling the mod to fix issues while also helping to keep the mod within console limits so that more Baldur’s Gate 3 players can experience the brilliance of the modding community.
Baldur’s Gate 3 modders are a different breed, only matched by the tenacity of Elder Scrolls and Fallout modders. One mod team consisting of hundreds of fans are working on a massive custom campaign that brings players back to BG2’s City of Coin with a completely new party, factions and much more.
