Before the Sonic the Hedgehog movie series and The Last of Us on HBO, video game movies were mostly terrible. Alongside the rough-but-fun Resident Evil films, we had to deal with sludge like Uwe Boll’s entire filmography and atrocious flicks like Max Payne. In 2016, there was Warcraft, a movie adaptation of Blizzard’s iconic RTS-turned-MMO franchsie.

Speaking on the Grit Podcast, via Eurogamer, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick spoke on the movie adaptation’s adaptation, revealing he also despises the live-action flick that was not only “terrible” but “one of the worst movies” the ex-CEO has ever seen.

Bobby Kotick on Warcraft 2016

In the interview, Kotick revealed that he had little involvement with the creation of the Warcraft movie, a film that was supposed to be the start of an entire movie trilogy. While there are some fans of the film (me, sadly, leave me alone), the film has largely been lambasted as a pretty awful piece of filmaking.

“World of Warcraft, the movie… I thought was a terrible idea,” Kotick explained. “They had signed the deal before we owned the company. It took loads of resources and distracted them.”

Kotick explained that Blizzard’s involvement in the film took away too much from what they were creating on the video game side. As creatives took over the film, game development slowed and content wasn’t being released.

“Think about all the people who make video games for a living, and now have a chance to make a movie,” he said. “They were, like, helping with the casting, and they’re on the set… it’s just a huge distraction. Our expansions were late, patches weren’t getting done on time.”

As for his thoughts on the film itself: “”And the movie was terrible,” he said. “It was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.”

Warcraft may be a bad movie, but it was made with heart, and there are some moments of greatness for fans of the franchise. However, it is universally panned so I’m probably just full of it, but I’m glad it exists.
