Epic Games co-founder and vice president Mark Rein has expressed his excitement about the PlayStation 4, in particular the somewhat surprising confirmation that the console will feature 8GB of GDDR5 memory.

“I really am excited,” Tweeted Rein. “8GB of super-fast RAM – holy cow!”

Regarding the next Xbox, he added: “Can’t wait to see what Microsoft has in store to combat this!”

Epic had earlier appeared at Sony’s PS4 announcement to show off an Unreal Engine 4 demo.

A new version of the Elemental real-time demonstration running on PS4 was shown off, with the action picking up where the original demo ended. The video features dynamic lighting and shadowing, real-time reflections, subsurface scattering and GPU-powered particle effects.

“We are thrilled to build onto our long-established success with PlayStation,” said Tim Sweeney, Epic’s founder and chief executive officer. “Unreal Engine 4 is expertly designed for the next generation of game development and the outstanding power of PlayStation 4. Today’s demonstration offers a preview of what developers can accomplish using our tools to create games for PlayStation 4.”
