Elden Ring has a huge year ahead of it. After the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion last year, FromSoftware’s open-world Soulslike it not only getting a fancy new version in the form of a new Tarnished Edition, but also a co-op spin-off in the form of Elden Ring Nightreign.
Despite the two new releases, the series is expected to make significantly less money than last year. At least, that’s what FromSoftware owner Kadokawa expects.
Elden Ring’s success is its own enemy
Revealed in the latest earnings report for Kadokawa, via Eurogamer, the FromSoftware owner is predicting a 60 percent decline in profit in gaming for FY2025. The company explains that the massive success of Elden Ring and its Erdtree expansion throughout 2024 means that it will see a significant reduction in profit this year.
This is in spite of the fact that there are two new releases in the Elden Ring series this year, the upcoming Tarnished Edition re-release for Xbox, PC, PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 and the multiplayer-focused Nightreign spin-off.
Kadokawa is dedicated to maximising the value of FromSoftware’s open-world game as a major franchise and also plans to exceed its underwhelming profit forecast with “new hit titles and expanded sales of past titles”.
What’s clear is that Elden Ring is an almost unparalleled hit for the company with millions upon millions of copies sold. While there is a significant amount of hype for Nightreign, it doesn’t match the almost-rabid fervour there was for the original game or its massive expansion.
Additionally, FromSoftware is also working on more games including the Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive The Duskbloods, a title scheduled to release in 2026. Additionally, the studio is dedicated to creating more single-player games after its finished its ongoing multiplayer kick.
As for the future of Elden Ring as a series, it seems evident that Kadokawa is hoping to keep the franchise going. While the idea of a numbered sequel was shut down not that long ago, it would certainly be a way to keep that profit growing.
