Dark Souls developer FromSoftware has revealed that it has no plans to create Elden Ring 2 anytime soon. With the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, the team is closing the book on the open world series as it moves onto several new projects.
While many gamers have been excited to see a sequel for the game in the future, director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained that Elden Ring 2 is not being considered at the company. A sequel may release sometime in the future, but gamers will have to wait a very long time.
Elden Ring 2 isn’t happening
Reported by IGN Japan, the From Software president explained that a direct sequel to the open world game isn’t in the cards for now. Speaking at the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 celebration, the gaming icon spoke brashly about the possibility of a follow-up.
“We’re not really considering developments such as an Elden Ring 2,” Miyazaki told press at the awards ceremony.
However, the game director explained that the IP isn’t going to be instantly retired. Miyazaki explained that the series could return “in some form in the future”, but it may not be in video game form.
Multiple games in the works
At the awards ceremony, Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that FromSoftware is currently working on a “diverse” line-up of projects, presumably all video games. Not a single title was confirmed, but there is hope that another Souslike game is in development alongside a continuation of Armoured Core.
With FromSoftware spending years on Elden Ring and even longer on its DLC expansion, it seems the team wants to explore another new world. While we don’t know whether the studio will stick to an open world or return to Dark Souls’ more hub-based environments, it’ll likely be fantastic either way.
