Approaching eight million units of FIFA 11 have been sold to retailers worldwide since its release, EA has announced.

“Our soccer game, FIFA 11, is breaking worldwide sales record,” EA COO John Schappert told investors during an earnings call last night. “The game has sold in almost eight million units to date, up more than 20 per cent over last year’s great performance.

He added: “FIFA 11 has captured a worldwide segment share of more than 80 per cent. It remains the number one title on Europe and has sold almost twice as many units as the number two game in Europe. This is amazing growth from our largest franchise, which has sold, life-to-date, over 100 million units.”

Not only is FIFA 11 outpacing sales of last year’s game, but it’s doing so in a year which also featured a World Cup release during the summer.

In addition, pre-release Konami had been bullish over a return to form for PES, but the game appears to have failed to eat into FIFA’s marketshare.
