The creator of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch version is being developed using Unreal Engine 4. This could mean that Dragon Quest XI will be a port of the PlayStation 4 version of the game. This revelation was confirmed by the series creator Yuji Horii who was speaking at the Epic Games Japan’s Unreal Fest East at the weekend.

According to a few Twitter users who’d attended the event, Horii has confirmed that Dragon Quest XI on the Switch is being developed on Unreal Engine 4, which is the same engine used for the PS4 game. The Nintendo Switch wasn’t officially supported until Unreal Engine 4 version 4.15, and Dragon Quest XI was developed in version 4.13. This could explain why there hasn’t been any footage from the Switch version shown as of yet. Horii was unsure about whether he could discuss the Switch version being developed in UE4, to which Square Enix programmer Mitsuru Kamiyama replied, ‘You already said it!’

Dragon Quest XI is the eleventh main entry in the Dragon Quest series, and while it’s always been hugely popular in Japan it’s never quite managed to replicate that performance in the West. The most recent Dragon Quest title released in Europe was a remake of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King on the 3DS, and this followed on from the excellent remake of Dragon Quest VII which had previously never been released in the EU.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age came out in July for on PS4 and 3DS in Japan. The game is due to come to the West in 2018, but so far Square Enix has only confirmed a PS4 release. Hopefully a Switch confirmation will follow.
