A Dragon Quest Heroes 3 game would be a tough prospect, but director Tomohiko Sho would rise to the challenge, as stated in an interview with Nintendo Everything.

Dragon Quest Heroes is the hack-and-slash spinoff of the Dragon Quest franchise. The first game’s commercial success spurred Omega Force and Square Enix to release the game in Western territories too, bundling all of the post-launch DLC from the Japanese release for free. Dragon Quest Heroes 2 came with copious changes to the experience, like the ability to switch classes, co-op mode, cross-platform play, and unique multiplayer battles. For this reason, Sho said that it would be no picnic to develop a third game in the Heroes series.

“So we’ve been talking a little about maybe putting out a third entry, but really the big thing is between 1 and 2, there were so many improvements made,” he elaborated. “If we were going to go from 2 to 3, what else can we put in to really impress the players who played both games that will get them really excited and really emotionally moved by it?” Sho added that there would be “a lot of hurdles” to the creative and practical aspects of developing a possible Dragon Quest Heroes 3.

Even though Sho and the team at Omega Force are “not sure how” they would evolve the experience, they are keen to make a new game. “Obviously this is a Square Enix property so we can’t really say anything, but I have kind of mentioned to them before, ‘Shouldn’t we consider a third entry?’” the director explained. Dragon Quest fans around the world are fond of the two games and they were received well, commercially and critically. Fingers crossed!

Dragon Quest Heroes 2 is out now for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
