At QuakeCon last Friday, id Software and Bethesda showed off more gameplay and detailed Doom Eternal’s multiplayer Battlemode.

Battlemode will pit one Slayer against two player-controlled demons, with five different enemy classes to tempt players into varying gameplay styles. One of these is the Revenant, a wiry jet-packed threat from above and everywhere else this agile menace can reach. Another is the Pain Elemental, a big floaty horned head who shields itself with small floaty horned skulls, and charges up a devastating attack. Lastly, Mancubus is a slow but formidable tank with giant missile launchers on the end of its hulking limbs.

Though these sound horrendously fun, the Slayer isn’t left vulnerable as a result. The player can teleport around the map using portals and avoid the onslaught with their aerial acrobatics. This is crucial to adapt to the demons’ abilities like summoning more swarms to distract the Slayer and leaving environmental traps to wear the opponent down. Along with the fast-paced, high-intensity, extremely-bloodied gameplay, Battlemode offers another feature that will extend matches and create nail-biting conclusions. Once the Slayer has offed one fiend, there’s a 20 second countdown til the demon respawns at half-health, so the pressure is on to hunt down its teammate and win the game.

Whether he is successful or not, Doom Guy is a modern man, and practices self-care in between the nightmare sequences defending the Earth from demonic forces. Later on in the Doom Eternal panel, creative director Hugo Martin and executive producer Marty Stratton spoke about the hub area, a safe haven where players can catch their breath. It will also provide a little insight to his personality and what matters most to the guy. ‘You'll see kind of, like, where he hangs out,’ Martin said. ‘You'll learn a lot about him through the game, if you look for it and pay attention.’

Doom Eternal will launch on November 22 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia and PC. Take a look at the Battlemode section of the keynote below.
