Buena Vista Games today announced that they have gained publishing rights to the Turok franchise. The new Turok games will be targeted towards the core gamer audience and will be developed by Buena Vista’s new studio, Propaganda Games. Buena Vista plans to publish games on multiple console and handheld, including next generation consoles.
“With the launch of the new console and handheld game platforms, we feel it is the perfect time to redefine Turok video games,” said Graham Hopper, senior vice president and general manager, Buena Vista Games. “We expect Turok to lead our growth strategy of creating action-oriented game franchises for the core gamer market.“
Turok’s first appearance as a videogames character was back on the Nintendo 64 and has since appeared on multiple platforms selling more than 5 million units worldwide.
“Through compelling new technology, game design and graphics, it is our goal to take the Turok franchise to new heights,” said Josh Holmes, vice president and studio general manager for Propaganda Games. “The brand’s rich, prehistoric setting and ferocious monsters provide us an extensive palette of content to create the most intense, action-packed game play for next generation console systems.“
While the first Turok game was a breakthrough in console graphics and was one of they key games early in the Nintendo 64’s life, later games in the series failed to build on the first game; Turok Evolution, released late in 2002, received a critical mauling. We await Buena Vista Games’ Turok games, in the hope that they can breathe life into an extinct franchise.
