A DICE developer has spoken on Twitter about Battlefield 3's online pass.

Responding to a question about whether you needed to purchase a new copy of Battlefield 3 to play on Xbox LIVE, gameplay designer Alan Kertz said "you can also purchase an online pass for a used copy."

When asked by somebody else why DICE was doing this, Kertz replied "because servers cost money, and used games don't make developers any money."

Battlefield 3 was rumoured to be using an online pass back in August.

DICE's last game, the 9/10 scoring Battlefield: Bad Company 2, contained a one-time use VIP pass with all new copies of the game. Access to online multiplayer was not restricted in Bad Company 2, but redeeming the code would grant you additional content.

Battlefield 3 will be released for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on November 28.
