Blizzard’s Diablo 2 Resurrected is an amazing remake of the 2000 original. Despite being a remake of an almost 25 year old game, the remake now has more players than Diablo 3 for the first time since, well, ever.
Revealed by Blizzard’s head of Diablo Rod Fergusson, players are gravitating towards the remake of the second game over its now 13-year-old sequel. However, the series’ latest entry, Diablo 3, reigns supreme.
Diablo 2 beats Diablo 3
Speaking to Game File, a paywalled blog, Fergusson revealed that player numbers for Diablo 2 Resurrected are actually higher than the still-supported player base of Diablo 3.
Despite being a remake of a game that most of its fanbase has already played ad nauseum, Fergusson revealed the game has a “very healthy” player base that retains high player numbers.
“We have more Diablo II Resurrected players than Diablo III right now,” the series lead explained.
While there are a lot of complaints regarding Diablo 4, Fergusson explains that the majority of the older games’ players have now switched over to the latest entry in the series. With new seasons coming to the game that add brand new seasonal abilities as well as new stories, players are engaging very well with the latest title.
After all, the release of the game’s first expansion, Vessel of Hatred, did have a very high attach rate. On launch, 60% of players were fighting through the game as Spiritborn, the expansion exclusive class, and not every person who purchased the expansion switched classes.
Nevertheless, Diablo 4 does still have issues with pacing and itemisation, and players have a much longer wait for another expansion as Blizzard already drops the plan for yearly releases. Despite this, the numbers don’t lie, and D4 is King.
