Bungie revealed at the weekend that its online-only shooter had surpassed 1.2 million concurrent players on September 9, across both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.

Bungie wrote on its Twitter that Destiny 2 had more concurrent players than the PC smash hit PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, saying thank you to all who were playing the game. While it didn’t provide an exact number of how many people were playing, more than 1.2 million people playing at the same time is nothing to be scoffed at.

This is also the first time an Activision Blizzard published game has revealed concurrent figures rather than units sold. A sign of the times perhaps?

I have no doubt those figures would have risen further over the course of the weekend, and it’d be interesting to see how many units the game’s sold since launch. Destiny 2’s overall launch sales have been reported to be 60% below that of the original Destiny in the UK charts, but it’s obvious quite a few people have gone the digital route this time around, and the UK charts only count physical copies sold.

The game must be doing ok however, and Bungie last week wrote on its blog that Destiny 2 has welcomed ‘millions of players’ just a day after release. This is all before the PC version comes out in late October, too.

Destiny 2 is out now on PS4 and Xbox One, and will be coming to the PC on October 24.
