Destiny 2 recently received update 8.1.5.3, and all the buffs, nerfs, and fixes within the patch were largely well received by the D2 community. Following the release of this update, Bungie has informed players online that they have rid the game of a “large number of accounts” for cheating, and the developer is also investigating an external exploit for Destiny 2.

Bungie bans “large number” of Destiny 2 accounts

On the official Destiny2Team account on X, Bungie has informed fans that a “large number of accounts” have been banned this week. There’s no specific number of how many accounts have been locked away, but they were banned for breaking the D2 terms of service by either cheating or violating Bungie’s code of conduct.

Per Bungie Help, players who receive an account ban can longer play banned activities on that profile. There’s also the important disclaimer that “any ban or restriction for a player determined to be cheating or violating [Bungie’s] Terms of Use may be applied to the entire fireteam of that player”.

In addition to dishing out bans this week, Bungie are now “investigating an exploit involving the use of an external tool that’s circumventing in-game Bungie Name filters”. Any accounts using this exploit will be banned, and Bungie is “actively working towards a solution to prevent names that break our Code of Conduct from being exposed to players”.

Fans are overwhelmingly happy in the replies that Bungie is banning cheaters and players breaking the ToS. Unfortunately, there are situations where banned players claim to be innocent, but removing actual cheaters from any multiplayer experience is always important.
