From Software’s spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls has been confirmed as Dark Souls, according to information inside the latest issue of Japanese video games magazine Famitsu.

The game had previously been revealed under the title, Project Dark.

An official reveal is coming this week in San Francisco, with the game’s Western release to be handled by Namco Bandai.

Dark Souls, described as a spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls and not a direct sequel, is said to be even more challenging than the cult PS3 game.

According to the magazine report the game will feature a medieval dark fantasy world, with themes such as “high fantasy of kings and knights”, “death and depth of the earth” and “flames of chaos”.

The hub structure linking Demon’s Souls five worlds is gone, with the gameworld here said to be one large connected area which encourages exploration.

Dark Souls is in development for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Demon’s Souls was one of 2010’s best titles on PS3, but its punishing difficulty made it a game which all but the console’s hardcore had difficulty getting on with. With Dark Souls promising an even greater challenge, it would appear From Software is building the game for the same audience.
