It wouldn’t be a Deadpool game if wasn’t notorious. While it was released in 2013, Activision quickly lost the rights to Marvel’s games in 2014, and it was quickly retired. A few years down the line, it was surprisingly relisted, then two years after that, delisted again. It’s had an incredibly rocky history, and getting hold of physical copies has been near-impossible for the past few years. Now, thanks to the wildly popular and viral Deadpool & Wolverine film, the price has skyrocketed, and mint-condition copies are selling for ludicrous price-tags.
Sealed copies of the game are being bid on for up to £142, and with days left on these auctions, you can only assume that that price will increase, perhaps reaching £200 at its highest.
Deadpool & Wolverine is the latest MCU to hit cinemas. Since Marvel acquired the rights back from Fox for the X-Men franchise and its characters, this has been one of the most highly anticipated movies to join Disney’s industry-defining franchise. With the recent announcement that Robert Downey Jr and the Russo Brothers returning for Avengers: Doomsday, which will incorporate the newly formed Fantastic Four, it’s looking likely that the latest Deadpool film will signpost a new and fresh breath of life for Marvel’s movies.
With it receiving the best opening weekend for an R-rated film of all time, Deadpool & Wolverine’s media iconicity has clearly played an instrumental part in boosting the 2013 game’s price. Scalpers are likely taking good advantage of this phenomena, making it hard for collectors to pick it up without a significant hit to the wallet.
As the game is the only title to act as a standalone entry for the Merc with a Mouth, it’s the only real opportunity for players to step into his fourth-wall breaking skin.
Fortnite players have recently had a chance to play Deadpool & Wolverine, while Wade Wilson and Logan’s bums have both featured as exclusive Xbox controllers. Despite these gaming crossovers giving Marvel fans chances to role-play as their favourite sarcastic mercenary, it sounds like paying gross prices for a mediocre comic adaptation is the only really immersive option at the moment.
