Guillermo del Toro’s Insane has been picked up by a new developer, the Hellboy director has revealed, following THQ’s decision to cancel the project earlier in the year.

“We were going to go to a lot of developers after THQ,” del Toro told IGN, “but it seems like we’re going to be developing it after the first meeting we had.

“I can’t disclose where it was, but we went to a great developer on the first meeting and it seems that they’re picking it up because they love the package.”

The game had previously been in development at Saints Row developer Volition. The rights to the IP were handed back to del Toro following THQ’s cancellation.

“We were two years away [under THQ],” he continued. “The development span of a game like this is three years. We put a good year and a half into it and we have the universe quite figured out, but we are now going to take that and start doing all the leg work with coding it, creating the engine, and starting to test it.

“It’s going to take a good two years of modeling and rendering and creating the environments and all of that. The basic tenants of the game is that it’s created, but now we’re going to need to start actually making it.”

The game was initially planned to form part of a trilogy, but del Toro suggests that’s no longer the case.

“I think we’re going to concentrate on making it a great game and then we’ll see [about turning Insane into a trilogy]. Obviously, among the assets was that idea, so I think there’s a possibility. But we are not exploring it.”

Insane was first announced by del Toro back in 2010 and had been due to release on 360, PS3 and PC next year.

The game was cancelled by THQ in August 2012, three months after it also washed its hands of Itagaki’s Devil’s Third.
