Death Stranding 2’s release date was supposed to be announced at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, before Hideo Kojima revealed it had be delayed due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

Regardless, at the very least, the game will be releasing in 2025 which is now confirmed by Kojima Productions itself.

When is Death Stranding 2 coming out?

As of yet, there isn’t a specific release date for Kojima’s sequel. His studio has offered up a preliminary window for release; 2025, though an official date was meant to be confirmed instead.

“We are talking about 2025, it will be released next year, so we will announce it next year … Due to unforeseen circumstances, we cannot announce it today,” Kojima said. ‘Today’ was in reference to September 29th 2024, which was the date that Death Stranding 2 was showcased at Tokyo Game Show.

Why has the Death Stranding 2 release date announcement been delayed?

At the very least, the release date for Death Stranding 2 has been decided upon already. That is good news. A delay in an official announcement can be explained by various different reasons, though the likelihood is that they’re saving that announcement for a time closer to the date, having already eaten up a football match length segment from TGS to showcase the game.

Another factor to consider is the current timeline. Kojima could have aimed to reveal a release date at PlayStation’s State of Play, which could easily have stolen the limelight from Ghost of Yotei, however he chose not to. Similarly, we’re still anticipating the official reveal of the Grand Theft Auto VI release date, which is rumoured to land in Fall ’24 period.

Kojima might be one of the biggest names in gaming, but nobody and nothing can compete with the massive shadow cast by GTA. If Kojima Studios and PlayStation are working together on the release for DS2, then avoiding Rockstar’s release period is going to be a vital imperative.

What do we know about Death Stranding 2: On the Beach?

It was initially announced at The Game Awards (2022) as DS2, with ‘Death Stranding 2’ being a working title. Since then, the full epithet was revealed, alongside the inclusion of new cast members; Elle Fanning and Shioli Kutsuna.

As always, it was paired with a hint from Kojima to dig deep into the trailer and “find details about it,” which is exactly what we’ve been told to do with the latest trailer.
