Death Stranding 2: On the Beach reviews are out, including our own, and early access is almost upon us before the game’s official release date. Like most modern games, the upcoming Hideo Kojima game has two performance profiles on PS5: Quality Mode and Performance Mode.

While some games have performance modes that look extremely low resolution or quality modes that look high-res but run terrible, which mode should players use on Kojima’s new game? Well, as it turns out, the game’s Performance Mode is so good there’s little reason not to use it.

Use Performance Mode in Death Stranding 2

According to the technical experts at Digital Foundry, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach’s Performance Mode is the “obvious choice” when playing the game on either PS5 or PS5 Pro. While the game’s 30fps 4K Quality Mode looks fantastic, the Performance Mode also looks amazing but runs at an almost flawless 60fps.

In the new game, Performance Mode runs at a 1440p internal resolution. While there is some image breakup on fine details and objects in the distance, the game largely looks amazing. Combined with very near-faultless performance “with only some minor camera movement hiccups that don’t affect the actual frame-rate”, there’s no reason to not play the game this way.

Additionally, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach’s visuals are a significant upgrade over the already gorgeous original game. Character models are substantially improved, audio has been improved for better surround sound gameplay with 3D audio support, and everything is substantially better.

Hideo Kojima games have always looked amazing. From Snatcher to Metal Gear Solid to his PT to now. However, alongside looking like gorgeous works of art, they also play extraordinarily well with rock-solid performance. (Well, apart from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, but the PS3 was a hog of a machine so who can blame him.)

Death Stranding 2 will likely be a divisive game, especially as Kojima actively changed parts of the game because they were too well-liked. However, no matter what you think about the game when you finally play it, it’s one hell of a technological achievement.
