After two very popular movies, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is a firm favourite amongst comic book movie fans – making Deadpool 3 a tantalising prospect.
Ever since the last movie in 2018, fans have been clamouring for a third outing. The R-rated series has been under 20th Century Fox’s remit until 2019 when the latter was bought by Disney. That saw the Deadpool series brought under Marvel Studios.
Now the Merc with with a Mouth is under the House of Mouse, what does that mean for a potential Deadpool 3? Here’s what we know so far.
Deadpool 3 writers, directors and Marvel Cinematic Universe status
We know a Deadpool 3 is coming. Disney president Bob Iger confirmed in 2017, even before the sale, that Disney intended to bring Deadpool into the MCU. Reynolds confirmed almost immediately after the sale in 2019 that the three-quel was in the works.
That’s been confirmed by overseer of the MCU, Kevin Feige himself. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are taking on the script, while frequent- Reynolds collaborator Shawn Levy (Free Guy) was confirmed as director this past March.
Deadpool 3 – will it have an R Rating?
The great news is that, despite now being under Disney, Deadpool 3 is aiming to keep its R Rating. So not to worry, fans of Wade Wilson’s potty mouth and his brand of dismemberment. In fact, from comments from the writing team, it seems Disney are keeping the reins pretty loose.
Speaking to Discussing Film.net Rhett Reese (who also wrote Deadpool 2) spoke of the writing process under the new shepherds. “Marvel’s really given us the support to maintain the tone and the vision that we have for it. They’ve been very hands-off and supportive, but they’ve also let us do what we do.”
Deadpool 3 – Predicted release date, cast, rumours and more
So when can we expect Deadpool 3? Well, at the moment it’s a bit of a mystery. The movie was notable by its absence at Comic Con this year, when Marvel unveiled their plans for Phase 5 and 6 of the MCU.
That’s not to say it won’t be out until that wraps up, however. The fourth-wall breaking, universe crossing nature of Deadpool means he can slot in just about anywhere.
Don Saladino, a regular trainer for Marvel stars such as Sebastian Stan, posted a picture of himself at the start of August with Ryan Reynolds. The image had the caption “and so it begins…” with an emoji of crossed swords; possibly alluding to Deadpool’s trademark kitana. Does this mean Reynolds has started training to don the red suit once more? On top of that, there’s rumours that filming could begin in late 2022 to early 2023.
Putting two and two together then, hopefully that could mean we see Deadpool 3 arriving in early-to-mid 2024. We’ll keep our ears open for an official announcement.
