Deep Silver has announced it will publish Dead Island for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC later this year.

Cut off from the rest of the world, the player’s only chance to survive is to fight to the death and find a way to escape from a tropical island resort overrun with zombies.

Developed by Techland using its Chrome Engine 5, Dead Island combines first-person action with a focus on melee combat, character development and customisation of a vast array of weapons.

With firearms and ammunition being scarce the player must rely on utilising found items as weapons for self-defence. A diverse range of items can be collected which can be used to transform the player’s ordinary makeshift weapons into instruments of destruction.

Dead Island also features role-playing elements which allow the player to develop one of the game’s unique character classes according to their preferences.

In addition, at anytime during a game up to four players can seamlessly join together to fight their way through the campaign cooperatively.

You’ll find the first in-game shots here.

After a huge amount of attention regarding the re-reveal trailer, we can’t help but feel a little underwhelmed by the prospect of a Left 4 Dead type experience with the weapon creation system of Dead Rising 2. We’re are, however, ready to give the game a chance, even if it’s not the most original sounding concept.

If you’re interested you can see a trailer for the game’s initial announcement back in 2007 here.
