CD Projekt Red has announced it has a sequel to future-dystopian RPG Cyberpunk 2077 in development, giving it the codename Project Orion.

The Polish outfit revealed the news during its latest Group Strategy update, where it also revealed it was working on no less than five new Witcher games.

While it’s very early days yet, the follow-up is said to “further develop the potential embodied by this universe.”

Cyberpunk 2077 sequel – what is it, is there a release date?

At the time of writing, there’s no date or even a window for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. It seems the project is very early in production – but there’s some interesting info about the studio working on it.

While it’ll still be with CD Projekt Red, development will actually be handled by the company’s new Boston location, rather than the company’s home country of Poland.

CD Projekt North America will include several members of the Cyberpunk 2077 development team, including Quest Director Pawel Sasko who confirmed on Twitter he’d be relocating following the launch of next year’s expansion, Phantom Liberty.

Given Sasko mentions he’ll be “establishing” the new studio then, it feels like the sequel may be a few years away yet, although of course CDPR could well be putting down some of the groundwork – at least storywise – in Phantom Liberty.

The original Cyberpunk 2077 has had something of a renaissance of late – despite the game famously launching with a myriad of technical issues, especially on older gen consoles.

It was still a pretty RPG underneath when it worked however, as evidenced by our thoughts in our review at the time.

Following many updates, and especially the game’s most recent update – Patch 1.6; the game has been enjoying its most successful period ever – with CD Projekt Red announcing they’ve sold over 20 million copies as of this week.

Hopefully, we’ll hear more on the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel Project Orion soon.
