It has been an incredibly interesting year so far when it comes to video game stats and sales figures. With titles such as Palworld kicking off the year with over 2 million concurrent players, it has only continued to get more interesting and equally as impressive. Currently, Black Myth Wukong has surpassed all expectations, smashing its way through the Steam charts as the second most played game of all time with over 2.3 million concurrent players, and Helldivers 2 also defied expectations by going on to sell over 12 million copies within its first three months of release.

While it seemed as though no game was going to match what Helldivers 2 had achieved, one game has risen from the ashes to dominate the gaming landscape this year, EA Sports College Football 25 which returned for the first time since 2013.

Video Game industry analyst Mat Piscatella has posted the latest sales figures for July 2024, which has revealed that College Football 25 has now overtaken Helldivers 2 as the best-selling game of 2024 so far. This comes as somewhat of a surprise, as at last count Helldivers 2 had exceeded 12 million copies sold, and that figure hasn’t been updated in some time. However, American Football has an incredibly large mainstream appeal both for the NFL and college football. Coupled with this being the first new entry in the series in 11 years, it makes sense that millions flocked to purchase the game, which has been met incredibly positively, our own review called it “a triumphant return.”

Interestingly, the EA Sports MVP Bundle, which includes both College Football 25 and Madden 25, is currently sitting as the 5th best-selling game, but the standalone Madden 25 hasn’t cracked the top 20, indicating that many players opted to purchase both games together. Elsewhere on the list, Elden Ring has remained strong as the 6th best-selling game due to the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree renewing interesting interest in the game. The most surprising entry is that GTA 5 is still hanging on, currently sitting at 18th despite the game being 11 years old.

Taking a look at the monthly stats for July 2024, College Football 25 debuted at number 1, while the MVP Bundle came in second, which makes the figure even more impressive that it could reach that many sales in just four weeks. The Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is the only other new entry to make the list, coming in at number 6. Helldivers 2 continues to slip down the ranks, currently sitting at 13th, while The Crew: Motorfest jumps from 37th to 19th, which could be explained by the start of Season 4, but that is unlikely to be something that brings that many players to the game, perhaps the renewed interest in the series due to the Stop Killing Games campaign is the cause.

One interesting point that stands out to me is that both Mortal Kombat 1 and Tekken 8 are sitting in the top 20, but Street Fighter 6 is nowhere to be seen, despite often being touted as the largest fighting game IP. This could signal that Mortal Kombat and Tekken are more popular in the United States, whereas Street Fighter has a greater appeal in other regions such as Europe and Asia. These figures do cover the period that Evo 2024 was held in Las Vegas, which saw the highest number of competitors at an esports event with over 10,000 players fighting for the top prize, as well as over 6.88 million hours watched across live-streaming platforms. This could have played a part in Mortal Kombat 1 jumping from 15th to 11th, and Tekken 8 climbing back from 30th to 14th place in the charts. You can check out the full list below.
