Call of Duty: Black Ops sold two million units during its first five days on sale, GfK Chart-Track has revealed.
The massive sales make Black Ops the biggest ever launch of any game in the UK, bettering Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s 1.8 million units. The two million unit sales generated a staggering £81.9 million.
Activision’s title grossed more than the entire UK entertainment software market over the previous two weeks combined. Week 45, 2010 becomes the biggest grossing week of all time (£113.8m), bettering the previous best of £107.6m back in week 52, 2008.
Xbox 360 won the battle of the platforms, taking a 55 per cent share of Black Ops sales. The PS3 edition took 42 per cent.
We all knew Black Ops was going to be big, but even Activision must be over the moon by the record-breaking sales of the title. It’s been a master class in combining a well produced game with great marketing – you’d be hard pressed to find someone in the UK who hasn’t heard there’s a new Call of Duty game in stores.
It’s likely sales will continue to be strong into the new year, too; the game has been pegged as the clear favourite for the Xmas No.1.
