Gameplay footage of a Dungeons and Dragons RPG that was in development as late as 2023 has been shared online. While AAA D&D games are currently in development under Wizards of the Coast’s new video game initiative, this scrapped project was never announced.

Shared online by MP1ST, the newly uncovered Dungeons and Dragons RPG was in development by Hidden Path Entertainment, known for developing Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Age of Empires II HD, Witchblood and more.

In the 10-minute gameplay footage of the scrapped D&D game, players controlled a party of characters in third-person. Players would explore seemingly open-zone environments and fight with real-time third-person combat against a slew of enemies.

Known internally as Project Dante, players would also have to explore dungeons (as expected) and solve puzzles with the abilities of their party members. There would be melee combat, ranged combat and magical abilities to use with party members that could assist or even be directly controlled with the press of a button.

A slew of leaked concept art, which should be backed up by fans, also revealed creatures that would be present including the titular dragons that go with the aforementioned dungeons and even a Tressym. The game also appeared fairly late in development with entire finished environments and unpolished, albeit extensive, combat systems.

Wizards of the Coast shut down Project Dante in 2023 alongside five other unannounced titles. The cancellation of the project led to substantial layoffs at Hidden Path Entertainment with the 65+ team of developers forced to lay off 44 employees, likely hindering the team from being able to make another project od this size.

The Dungeons and Dragons IP holders also have more video game projects in the works, including a cinematic adventure game from Star Wars Jedi director Stig Asmussen. Additionally, the company is looking to create a Baldur’s Gate 4 project without the assistance of Larian Studios that will continue to “raise the bar” set by the RPG veterans, but only time will tell how that pans out.
