The core concept of Call of Duty involves players firing bullets from a variety of weaponry and watching them hit their intended target. Whether it’s Black Ops 6 or Warzone, hit registration ensures the weapon arsenal behaves as the developers intended.

With the Season 1 Reloaded update moving into view, awful hit registration within multiplayer and the battle royale continue to frustrate fans loading into the action. In a bid to shed light on why the shots are lining up with the enemy but failing to deal damage, the developers claim they’ve found the cause of the problem but players aren’t convinced.

Call of Duty visuals causing terrible hit registration

On December 2, 2024, The CODUpdates X account officially acknowledged an issue with hit registration across both Black Ops 6 and Warzone. It claims that ‘erroneous visual blood effects’ are causing the problem because they appear when damage isn’t being dealt against the enemy.

As expected, those who flagged the issue before the statement was released are furious with the claim with many believing Activision is gaslighting fans into believing some unwanted blood splatters are negatively impacting matches. “I’m sorry but I’m not gonna be gaslit into thinking the erroneous visual blood effects are to blame,” says content creator Loochy. “If I place the reticle directly on someone’s face, pull the trigger, and get a bloodshot, the game recognises that I hit them. Yet, I’m doing no damage?” they add.

To demonstrate the full extent of hit registration Warzone pro FlexZ captured a clip of him firing on an opponent. The slow-motion footage shows the first two bullets hitting the target but no hitmarker appears to signify the shots have landed despite the crosshair being perfectly in line with the other player.

Why is CoD hit registration broken?

With many not believing blood splatters are causing Call of Duty’s terrible hit registration, not even the developers are sure as to why bullets aren’t dealing the correct amount of damage in the heat of battle. While it’s good to see Treyarch and Raven Software acknowledging the problem, it’s far from ideal to see several players disprove the claim.

The mid-season update gives the developers the perfect opportunity to apply a more concrete fix that will allow players to deal the maximum amount of damage beginning with the first bullet that leaves the chamber of their favourite weaponry. For the time being, make sure you fire a few extra shots to secure the kill every single time.
