Bungie has refused to deny upcoming FPS Halo 3: ODST will feature new enemy types.

Speaking at a recent press event in London, Bungie senior designer Lars Bakken clammed up when asked whether ODST will have any new enemy types, or whether creepy parasitic alien life form the Flood will turn up.

“I can’t talk about that!” Bakken said.

Asked whether the Flood will make an appearance, Bakken paused before looking to Xbox group product manager Ryan Crosby, who looks after all things Halo at Microsoft, and said: “Errrrrrr… have we talked about that?”

Crosby stepped in: “You know that there are Brutes and Grunts and things of that nature. Beyond that we’re not really talking about the rest of the enemies.”

The pair also skirted around the possibility of players being able to pick up side missions in ODST, which is an open world game set in the Earth city of New Mombasa.

“I guess I can’t really talk about those kinds of things,” said Bakken. “But just know that even though the city is pretty desolate there are some things going on in there we aren’t talking about yet.”

Crosby added: “Really fun elements. The city is full of danger in terms of the way that you work your way through, and it’s being patrolled and you’ll run into groups of enemies all over the place. But beyond that there are certainly things to explore and fun surprises along the way.”

Optional things you can explore?

Crosby: “Yeah, they’re optional, I guess.”

Bakken: Yeah absolutely. The way you approach New Mombasa is completely up to you. If you want to just get to the next clue object and play that flashback mission, there’s nothing stopping you from doing that, other than the Covenant that are running around the city. But there are other things for you to explore as well if you choose to. There will definitely be a certain part of the population that plays the game that’ll be really into some of the cool stuff we have in there.”

Bakken and Crosby’s comments are sure to fuel speculation that ODST will include completely new enemy types. During our recent hands-on with the co-operative Firefight mode, we spotted some familiar faces, including Grunts, Brute Chieftains, the wasp-like Drones, the shielded Jackals and Hunters.
