Video game TV and movie adaptations have been a mixed bag in terms of quality. Some shows such as The Last of Us transcended the popularity of the game series and became mainstream hits, while the first Super Mario Bros. movie will be looked at for generations as to how not to adapt a video game. Thankfully Nintendo nailed its second outing with the 2023 Super Mario movie, which grossed over $1.3 billion.

Unfortunately, there have been many more flops than hits, and it looks like the latest video game adaptation will be another one for the record book as the new Borderlands movie has bombed. However, it has helped the video games gain a new lease of life, so at least that is something good that has come from this release.

According to Steamdb, Borderlands 3 has seen a staggering 486% increase in players since the new Borderlands movie was released on August 9th. Two days prior, the game sat at 2,111 concurrent players before jumping up to a peak of 12,379. While this is a far cry from the peak it saw when Borderlands 3 was finally released on Steam after having previously been an Epic Games Store exclusive, it is great to see players flock back to it.

Other entries in the series have also seen a boost in players, with Borderlands 1 typically seeing between 65-150 players but that figure jumped to 475. Although that isn’t a huge amount of players, Borderlands 1 was also released all the way back in 2009 and has seen numerous newer entries in the 15 years since. Borderlands 2 also saw a major boost in players, going from 1,873 to 7,938, a 323% increase.

Even spin-off titles have reaped the benefit of the franchise being turned into a blockbuster movie, with Tales From The Borderlands jumping from 9 to 139 players, and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands going from 365 to 1,379 concurrent players.

Unfortunately, despite it bringing some players back to the series, the Borderlands movie has been an overwhelming flop at the box office, having grossed just $8.8 million during its opening weekend. On the flip side, Deadpool & Wolverine has remained at number 1 for the third weekend in a row, with the total revenue currently sitting at over $494 million. Borderlands also hasn’t faired well with critics, with the Rotten Tomatoes critic score at just 9%, surprisingly, the audience score is considerably higher at 50%. It is possible that Borderlands could go down in the history books as both Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart’s worst movie of their respective careers.
