Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Ranked Play is set to release later this month, and Team Ricochet – Activision’s in-house cheater prevention squad, has made it very clear they’re going to clamp down on VPN abusers before it launches. VPN abuse relates to players using a VPN to get easy lobbies, which subsequently allows them to boost their ranks easily.

So that’s why I’m so bad at multiplayer

Thankfully, ahead of Ranked Play’s arrival, the team posted a message stating they’ll be cracking down on such behaviour, in a set of measures designed to tackle this ‘combat boosting’. “In preparation for Ranked Play going live on November 21 for Black Ops 6, Treyarch has helped deliver several updates to combat disruptive behavior. These updates include enhanced AFK detections to battle against account boosting – one of several measures to combat boosting – and adjusting ping thresholds to require players to play matches in their region to cut down on VPN abuse,” the message on the official Call of Duty blog reads.

“To unlock Ranked Play in Black Ops 6, players will need to win 50 match-made multiplayer matches. This ensures that they’re experienced with multiplayer before they enter the mode and gives #TeamRICOCHET a historical match history to examine before an account enters Ranked Play.”

Elsewhere, there will also be a Replay Investigation Tool, which has the ability to re-watch any match and spot foul play. To help add another level of security and ensure a fair contest, Ranked Play will also be subjected to a manual review “to any account rename requests for players at Crimson rank or higher.”

This isn’t the first time Team Ricochet has pledged to come down hard on those gaming the system. During the Black Ops 6 beta, they claim to have stopped more than 12,000 cheating accounts “before they ever saw the inside of a match”.

Despite their efforts, VideoGamer.com revealed that there had been a surge of anti-anti-cheat software designed to counter Ricochet’s efforts. These cheats claim to offer boosts from aiming to marking enemy locations during multiplayer matches.

Ranked Play will be arriving to Black Ops on November 21.
