Battlefield 1 has been knocking around for about 18 months now, so it's probably no surprise to learn that DICE has decided to call time on monthly updates for its acclaimed World War I shooter this summer.
Writing in a new blog post, the studio confirmed that monthly updates for Battlefield 1 will cease in June, although that doesn't mean support for the shooter is stopping completely. For starters, following the release of Rupture as a free download, all maps from the They Shall Not Pass expansion will be made available to everyone from next month.
June meanwhile will see the launch of Shock Operations, which functions as a slightly revamped version of the existing Operations mode that sees players battling across multiple maps in a special campaign. However, Shock Operations focuses its iron sights on sector-by-sector combat on a single map, and allows for up to 40 players to duke it out with five different locations available. What's more, Shock Operations will be open to everyone free of charge.
DICE's plans to wind down Battlefield 1 updates isn't all that surprising. After all, the studio is working on the next Battlefield game, which is due to launch on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One later this year. Rumours have suggested the follow-up will be set during the Second World War and feature a dedicated co-op mode, although nothing official has been confirmed yet.
Battlefield 1 was released on PS4, PC, and Xbox One in October 2016.
