Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the best CRPGs of all time, but not everyone is able to play the game. Despite the wave of accessibility tools available to gamers nowadays, there’s still no way for many to play games such as BG3.
However, there are numerous companies working on neural implants that allow disabled gamers to interface directly with computers via thought. As a game that can be played entirely with a cursor on PC, Baldur’s Gate 3 is now being used as valuable test software for implant technology.
Swen Vinke plays Baldur’s Gate 3 neural implant
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke recently responded to a video of the most updated version of the Neuralink implant. In the video, Rob Greiner, the sixth person implanted with the implant, used the device to play Baldur’s Gate 3 on a laptop.
In response, Vincke praised the implant technology for allowing more people to experience games. However, the Larian Studios CEO explained that the team was shown a more impressive version of neural implant technology playing BG3 in the past.
“This is amazing – but there is an even more amazing version of this,” the Larian Studios CEO explained. “The team at mindspeakerbci.com demonstrated our game being played with the power of the mind, but without an implant. Super impressive stuff.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game that already has a suite of accessibility options including extensive subtitle resizing. Unfortunately, little can be done on a developer’s side to account for extensive disabilities. However, with the arrival of proper accessibility controllers or the aforementioned neural implants, there’s a lot of work being done to ensure that those who are unable to interact with the same things we are will also be able to engage with them.
Of course, neural implants aren’t just about letting people game. However, gaming is an extreme test case of what the technology can do, balancing massive input combinations and tiny movements based on thought patterns to control the game. While the technology is designed for users to be able to write messages and interact with PCs in everyday ways, working out these extreme examples makes the tools more effective in the long run.
